Flight cancellations summer 2026: Your rights as a passenger

• Right to a replacement flight or ticket refund: The airline must either offer you an alternative flight connection to your destination or refund the ticket price.
• According to the EU Passenger Rights Regulation, you are entitled to compensation if the airline has informed you of the flight cancellation less than 14 days in advance.
• Amount of compensation: The amount of compensation for flight disruption depends on the circumstances and varies depending on the flight route. It can be between 250 and 600 euros per person.
• Right to benefits in the event of long waiting times: If there are considerable waiting times at the airport, you are entitled to utilities such as food, drinks, communication facilities and, if necessary, accommodation.
• If the alternative flight does not depart until the next day, the airline is obliged to pay for your overnight stay in a middle-class hotel and the transfer there. If you have to wait several nights until another flight departs, the airline must also pay for several nights’ accommodation in a hotel.
• German law stipulates that the right to compensation for a canceled flight expires after three years. This means that you must assert your claim within this period in order to receive compensation. So if your flight is canceled in summer 2026, you have until summer 2029 to assert your claims against the airline.
